Well, I've just watched the little film in question, on ABC TV at 2:20 in the morning, surprise surprise :)

Although I agree with most of your observations - especially in regard to the crappy performance of the male lead - this was an enjoyable & rather suspenseful little film.

I would have enjoyed it even without the quite cleverly handled plot, because I just love those 1950's British interiors, lamps, telephones (which featured prominently here) wallpaper & what have you. And the occasional atmospheric street scene.

What the ABC consistently brings us in these late night outings is the average, mediocre entertainments of the time & place (with the time & place varying nicely from 1930s Hollywood to immediate postwar Britain, & lots of variations on those themes). And it's all quite fascinating for students of 20th century English-speaking culture.
